GMO

Taking on Goliath

It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to Goliath and that’s just what a group of small family-owned farms in Argentina are doing. These brave Argentine tobacco farmers have just filed lawsuits against the goliath Monsanto as well as other major tobacco companies like Philip Morris claiming these companies knowingly poisoned them with herbicides and pesticides subsequently causing “devastating birth defects” in their children.

What's in Your Burger?

If the GMO food additives in 70% of your process food options doesn’t bother you, then try this. In the light of the current massive recall on frozen burgers in Canada, it’s rather timely as Canadians are being advised to avoid more than 135 burger and beef steakette products.

GMO Foods Not Welcome

Countries in Europe and North America are taking a stand against the cultivation of transgenic (GMO) crops. France will reinstate a ban on the cultivation of Monsanto’s MON810 maize (corn) just in time to prevent the genetically modified grain being sown this year.

The French public is fiercely opposed to genetically modified organisms (GMO). The French government's request to the EU Commission was based on "significant risks for the environment" shown in recent scientific studies, mainly one by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) in December on "bt11" GMO maize which said its conclusions also apply in some respects to the MON810.

Just Say No

It looks like there is finally some real opposition against genetically engineered foods.

Vermont, California, Michigan and Washington are all working on ballot initiatives to get mandatory labelling of genetically modified (GM) foods in their states. Vermont takes it a step further though, as the legislation would effectively also end phoney "all natural" claims for products that contain wholly unnatural, GMOs.

Unknowingly consumers have allowed Monsanto and other biotech companies to saturate the market with their genetically altered food additives. The misuse of the "all natural" label has only made matters worse.

The scientific evidence piling up against Roundup, the best-selling weed killer for home and farm use, is starting to sound a bit sci-fi. The latest damaging evidence against this potent herbicide, once widely believed to be safe, comes from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which is now detecting glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, in streams, the air, and even rain.

Pesticides on Trial: The Environment

On the 27th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster in India, anti-pesticide advocates are putting the six largest pesticide companies under the accountability spotlight. According to a press release from the North American branch of Pesticide Action Network (PAN), attorneys, witnesses and jurors will put the 'Big Six' -- Monsanto, Sygenta, Bayer, BASF, Dow and Dupont on trial for what PAN calls "their crimes against humanity.

Now It's in the Blood

For all the empty promises the bioseed corporations have made to try and convince consumers that GMO food is safe, a study from University of Sherbrooke, in Quebec, Canada is perhaps the most telling.

Genetically modified crops include genes extracted from bacteria to make them resistant to pest attacks. The toxin is derived from a soil bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Corporate scientists who engineer these bioseeds claim there is no danger to the environment or to human health maintaining that the Bt toxin poses no danger to human health as the protein breaks down in the human gut. But the presence of this toxin in human blood clearly demonstrates that this does not happen.

Staxed

"The lack of transparency in the current approval process, leading as it does to an inability to evaluate the scientific rigour of the assessment process, seriously compromises the confidence that society can place in the current regulatory framework used to assess potential risks to human, animal and environmental safety posed by GMOs."

Canadian GE BioFoods

GE Crops Canada
It's been 15 years since genetically engineered biocrops and biofoods were first introduced into Canada without public debate. Today, over half of Canada’s corn and soy is genetically engineered(GE). The majority of canola grown in Canada is GE. The vast majority of GE biocrops are in used in processed food as ingredients such as corn starch, soy lecithin and canola oil. There is no law requiring the labelling of GE ingredients.

On The Wind

"With the introduction of primitive irreversible genetic techniques in a dangerous combination with a product and profit orientated mind-set forced on society by a powerful political-industrial complex, humanity faces an uncertain future."
