Glyphosate Accumulates in Roundup Ready GM Soy

A new study in Food Chemistry shows high levels of glyphosate—the active weed-killing chemical in Monsanto's Roundup—are turning up in thousands of nonorganic packaged foods including those labelled 'natural' and in animal feed for livestock like pigs, cows, chickens, and turkeys.

Questions Raised About EPA-Monsanto Collusion

Recent evidence reveals Monsanto's hand may indeed have been in the EPA's regulatory cookie jar. The revelations are contained in a court filing brought by more than 50 people suing Monsanto claiming the company's glyphosate based herbicide branded Roundup gave them or their loved ones non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) after exposure to the herbicide. The filing includes information about alleged efforts within the Environmental Protection Agency to protect Monsanto’s interests and unfairly aid the agrochemical industry and that Monsanto has spent decades covering up cancer risks linked to the chemical. The EPA’s stamp of approval for the safety of glyphosate over the last few decades has been key to the success of Monsanto’s genetically engineered, glyphosate-tolerant crops.

Should Glyphosate be Banned

For years, the public has been assured that the chemical glyphosate was safe whether it was found in the environment or in our fresh water supply or in the processed food we feed our families. As a result, farmers spray more than 185 million pounds of glyphosate-based herbicides, particularly Monsanto’s Roundup, on food crops in North America The questionable agrochemical is also the third most commonly used herbicide for industrial and commercial land and the second most commonly used herbicide in the home and garden. A whopping twenty-five million applications are spread on yards within easy reach of children, pregnant women, the elderly and pets, every year. In short, this herbicide is everywhere. So why the concern? Turns out the industry reports behind glyphosate's safety may have been overstated.

Excessive Sodium and Sugar in Processed Food for Toddlers

Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) analyzed sodium and sugar levels in 1,074 infant and toddler dinners, snacks, fruits, vegetables, dry cereals, juices and desserts. Not only was the processed food heavily salted and contained too much sugar, it didn’t matter whether the toddler’s meal was organic or otherwise.

Glyphosate Found Kellogg's GMO Froot Loops

Independent DNA lab testing has verified that 100% of the corn in Kellogg’s Froot Loops is genetically modified, containing DNA sequences known to be present in insecticide producing Bt toxin and Monsanto's Roundup Ready BT corn. What’s more, tests documented the presence of glyphosate at 0.12 mg/kg, the main chemical ingredient of Monsanto’s best-selling Roundup weedkiller. Food manufacturers like Kellogg's have the choice to source their corn from organic farmers but simply don’t. Why? Profit margin. But there's a bigger issue here than profit taking. Our kids are eating transgenic food that has been linked to serious health issues.

Study Links Pesticides and Autism

A recent California-based study has uncovered a strong link between pesticides and autism. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, MIND Institute examined associations between specific classes of pesticides, including organophosphates, pyrethroids and carbamates, applied during participants pregnancies. The data revealed pregnant women who live in close proximity to fields and farms where chemical pesticides are applied experience a 66 percent increased risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder or developmental delay.

Fighting Back: Lawsuit Challenges Pesticide Spraying near Schools, Homes, Organic Farms

The City of Berkeley, the Environmental Working Group and the Pesticide Action Network along with eight other activist groups, sued the California Department of Food and Agriculture over the agency’s approval of a statewide “pest management” plan that allows pesticide spraying on schools, organic farms and residential yards, including aerial spraying over homes in rural areas. Regulators approved the program despite receiving over 30,000 public comment letters calling for a less toxic approach that would protect the vitality and resilience of the state’s food system and the economic interests of organic farmers.

New Pesticide Rules for California Strawberries

California is the leading producer of strawberries in the U.S. In 2013, more than 2.3 billion pounds of strawberries were harvested annually. Of the 16.3 percent exported, Canada imports the majority of California’s fresh and frozen strawberry produce. So do California's new pesticide rulings make these treasured sweet berries safe to eat? Unfortunately not.
