BPA Free Containers Not So Safe After All

Here we go again. Not so long ago governments worldwide banned the use of BPA in plastic containers. Studies showed the plastic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) was linked to some serious health problems including breast and prostate cancer, heart trouble, type II diabetes, autism, liver tumours, asthma, infertility and obesity. In response to the public's outcry, manufacturers removed the chemical from their products and replaced it with bisphenol S (BPS). Now it's been discovered that the replacement is as bad or worse than the original. This latest discovery, demonstrates yet again, the failure of a regulatory system that allows manufacturers to use chemicals that have never been properly tested to rule out potential health effects.

Honeybee and Human Health Stress Factors

In 2002, in support of the ongoing effort to better understand the complexities that surround human health, an international consortium of scientists and universities decided to sequence the honeybee’s DNA. Honeybees captured scientific musing because they exist in a complex social community and their social behaviour is closely related to our own. Referenced as the Bee Genome Proect (BGP) the study pinned down some gene and cell functionality uniquely shared between honeybees and those of us who are vertebrates leading scientists to believe the evolutionary ties of honeybees and humans go much deeper than originally thought.

New Study Shows Roundup Damages Sperm

In the first study to measure the delayed effects of exposure to Roundup on sperm in mammals, the molecular biology department at the University of Caen, France, found that rats exposed to the glyphosate based pesticide Roundup altered testicular function after only 8 days of exposure at a concentration of only 0.5%. This concentration is similar to levels found in water after agricultural spraying.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

The medical community is witnessing a rapid rise in the deterioration of human digestive health not only in adults, but in kids. Food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease has skyrocketed by as much as 40% and intestinal permeability, more commonly referred to as leaky gut syndrome, is also on the rise. Although the disorder is something of a medical mystery, this serious digestive disorder compromises the stomach lining (epithelium) making it so porous that damaging bacteria and endotoxins can leak through.

Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurobiological condition that can affect the normal function of the gastrointestinal, immune, hepatic, endocrine and nervous systems. This life-long affliction impacts normal brain development leaving individuals with communication problems and difficulty with typical social interactions.

Taking on Goliath

It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to Goliath and that’s just what a group of small family-owned farms in Argentina are doing. These brave Argentine tobacco farmers have just filed lawsuits against the goliath Monsanto as well as other major tobacco companies like Philip Morris claiming these companies knowingly poisoned them with herbicides and pesticides subsequently causing “devastating birth defects” in their children.

Pesticides on Trial: The Environment

On the 27th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster in India, anti-pesticide advocates are putting the six largest pesticide companies under the accountability spotlight. According to a press release from the North American branch of Pesticide Action Network (PAN), attorneys, witnesses and jurors will put the 'Big Six' -- Monsanto, Sygenta, Bayer, BASF, Dow and Dupont on trial for what PAN calls "their crimes against humanity.

Now It's in the Blood

For all the empty promises the bioseed corporations have made to try and convince consumers that GMO food is safe, a study from University of Sherbrooke, in Quebec, Canada is perhaps the most telling.

Genetically modified crops include genes extracted from bacteria to make them resistant to pest attacks. The toxin is derived from a soil bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Corporate scientists who engineer these bioseeds claim there is no danger to the environment or to human health maintaining that the Bt toxin poses no danger to human health as the protein breaks down in the human gut. But the presence of this toxin in human blood clearly demonstrates that this does not happen.

Death By Nutrition

"There is more than a casual association between GM/GE foods and adverse health effects. There is causation, as defined by recognized scientific criteria."
